These strings permit you to make on the spot replacement of strings that break, except on the largest concert grands. You simply unwind the copper winding to match the broken string, and install it. The core of universal strings is hexagonal, so when you remove copper winding, you simply crimp the end of the winding a bit, and the core wire holds the winding in place. You will find that an exact duplication will result in a more perfect sound after some time passes. These universal strings are avoided on concert and performance pianos if the customer can afford the exact duplicated strings. The universal strings also have the advantage of being quick to order from us or the suppliers.

0.015n diameter steel Piano Wire. 36?n long. Used to clear breather tubes and to open up clogged feed channels, Snorkel tubes and for many other repair operations.
Wire at the thicknesses used here does not have a lot of compressional stability, it will tend to buckle out under compressional forces, this is a highly undesirable trait. We counter this trait by supporting the wire along the length of it with support tubes (tube sheath).
As with the wire, there are many options for support tubes. Some suppliers provide sheath with their lengths of wire, other times you are required to make it yourself. One option which does appear to work well is to use cigarette wrapper papers (or other equally thin paper) that have been gummed and rolled around a piece of wire that's slightly larger than the wire that you intend to use for the control wires (it must be slightly larger to prevent binding).
